JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.— Montreat's women's tennis team started its fall portion of the campaign at Carson-Newman University on Thursday, participating in the Mossy Creek Duals. The Eagles hosted the event, and Montreat was joined by the King University Tornado. The three-day competition saw women's action on Thursday and Friday. None of the event matches and stats officially counted towards individual or team records for the season.
On day one, the Cavaliers faced Carson-Newman in singles matches. In five pairings, none of the Cavaliers could secure a win, though
Chiharu Ito came closest with a 7-5, 6-1 loss. Every Cav won at least one game in their initial competition. Due to rain, singles matches against King were postponed to Friday.
The action resumed Friday as the Cavaliers continued singles play against King. Facing the Tornado with renewed energy, Ito and Yamile Cuiza each triumphed in comebacks after dropping the first set. Ito rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win, while Cuiza prevailed 5-7, 6-3, 10-1.
Clara Roman battled through three sets but ultimately fell short in her match.
The Cavs compete next on Friday, Sept. 12, when they will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. for a team match at Converse University.
