CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The sixth-seeded Montreat College women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Monday with a 4-1 loss to third-seeded Brenau University in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament. The Cavaliers earned their lone point through a victory on the fourth singles court. With the defeat, the Cavs finished the year at 5-14 (3-5 AAC), while Brenau moved on to the semifinals, improving to an 11-5 (6-2 AAC) record.
Montreat came up short in doubles play despite a competitive showing across the courts. Clara Roman and Catalina Pan dropped a 6-3 decision in the top flight, while Yamile Cuiza and Ana Marija Horvacki were locked in a 5-5 battle at No. 2 when play was halted. The Golden Tigers captured the doubles point with a forfeit triumph on the third court.
In singles play, Horvacki secured a win on court four, finishing 6-4, 6-2, to secure a point for the Cavs. However, Roman faced a tough challenge at the top spot, falling 6-3, 6-3. The victory, coupled with Montreat forfeits in the fifth and sixth flights, clinched a 4-1 final in Brenau's favor.
Two other Cavaliers battled and saw their matches end unfinished. Pan, competing at No. 2, fought through two tight sets, trailing 5-7, 4-1. Cuiza split sets in a back-and-forth match before it was halted, with the score sitting at 4-6, 6-4, 0-3.
