SWANNANOA, N.C. — The Montreat College women's tennis team hosted the Methodist University Monarchs on Saturday for the squad's regular season and home finale. Battling a talented NCAA Division III opponent, the Cavaliers landed on the wrong side of a 6-1 final score. With the defeat, the Cavs moved to 5-13, while the Monarchs improved to 14-2.
Methodist captured the doubles point thanks to advantageous results on the first and third courts.
Catalina Pan and
Clara Roman suffered a 6-2 decision at No. 1, while Montreat forfeited the third doubles pairing due to only having four players available.
Ana Marija Horvacki and
Yamile Cuiza momentarily kept the hosts alive in the quest for the doubles point with their 6-3 triumph in the second flight.
Continuing their momentum, the Monarchs won five of the six singles clashes. Cuiza proved to the be lone winner among the Cavaliers as she needed three sets to beat out her foe, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Pan and Horvacki also went the distance before falling just shy of victory. In the top spot, Pan took the initial set, 6-2, before losing the next two frames, 6-7 (5-7), 0-1 (8-10). Meanwhile, Horvacki lost the first set but rebounded to force a decisive final frame. The Subotica, Serbia native ultimately lost her match on the fourth court, 4-6, 6-2, 0-1 (6-10).
Roman put up a fight at No. 2 before dropping a 6-4, 6-2 result. MU secured forfeit triumphs at No. 5 and No. 6, sealing its 6-1 team triumph.
The Montreat College women's tennis squad now enters the postseason portion of its schedule. Seeded sixth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament, the Cavs are slated to take on third-seeded Brenau University in a first-round matchup on Monday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
