SWANNANOA, N.C. — The Montreat College women's tennis team made quick work of the Mars Hill University Lions, an NCAA Division II program, on Thursday at Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, N.C. Behind two doubles wins and a trio of singles victories, the Cavaliers captured a 5-2 triumph over their foes. With the result, the Cavs improved to 5-11 on the campaign, while MHU fell to 3-16.
With both sides having fewer than six players available, the two contested doubles clashes were each worth a team point. Montreat grabbed wins on both courts, vaulting the hosts out to an early 2-0 advantage.
Catalina Pan and
Clara Roman secured a 6-3 victory in the top pairing, while
Ana Marija Horvacki and
Yamile Cuiza seized the second bout, 6-1.
In singles play, the Lions tallied their two points at No. 1 and No. 5. Roman fought hard but lost a 6-0, 6-2 decision in the top flight, while the Cavaliers forfeited the fifth matchup due to only having four healthy players.
Despite those minor setbacks, Montreat still surged forward toward victory. Pan bested her opponent on the second court with a 6-4, 6-1 scoreline. Cuiza did the same at No. 3, fending off her foe, 6-3, 6-4. Horvacki didn't lose a single game in the fourth flight, coasting to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Roughly three hours after the match began, the Cavs clinched their 5-2 triumph.
