LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.— The Montreat College women's tennis team spent Thursday and Friday on the campus of Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Ga. for the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NAIA South Regional Championships. Competing in a mixture of bracketed singles and doubles action, the Cavaliers battled foes from Tennessee Wesleyan University, Georgia Gwinnett and SCAD Savannah.
While the Cavs failed to pick up a match victory over the weekend, both
Chiharu Ito and
Clara Roman nearly snagged their singles contests. Playing in the round of 32, Ito won her initial set via a 6-2 scoreline. Ito's foe from TWU bounced back with a 7-5 triumph in the second frame, forcing a decisive third set. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Ito landed on the wrong side of a 10-5 final.
Roman also went to three sets, stealing the opening frame 7-6 thanks to a 7-4 tiebreak. The Barcelona, Spain native also dropped the following two sets, doing so with 7-5 and 10-4 scores.
Yamile Cuiza captured one game in her singles match, while both
Ana Marija Horvacki and
Kathryn Salazar suffered 6-0, 6-0 defeats. Salazar took on the NAIA's 75th-ranked singles player from last spring. All five Cavaliers saw their tournament journeys end in the round of 32.
Doubles play also featured stiff competition for Montreat. Ito and Roman garnered a bye to the quarterfinal round before losing to the No. 2 seed, 8-2. Meanwhile, Horvacki and Cuiza dropped an 8-0 final in the round of 16.
