LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.— The Montreat women's tennis team sent four of its student-athletes to Georgia Gwinnett College from Sept. 19-22 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NAIA South Regional Championships. Each Cavalier picked up at least one win in singles play, while a pair advanced to the round of 16.
Like the men's draw, the women's region featured stiff competition in No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett, No. 5 Middle Georgia State, No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan and No. 24 SCAD Atlanta. Despite the tough matchups, the Cavs were able to find moments of success throughout the tournament.
Ainhoa Ordonez and
Chiharu Ito picked up wins in the round of 32 to keep their championship bracket journeys alive. Ordonez came away with a victory in one of the most competitive matches of the tournament, winning 6-4, 5-7 [11-9]. Meanwhile, Ito cruised 6-3, 6-2 in her round of 32 triumph. Both Cavaliers fell in the round of 16, ending their runs with a 1-1 record.
Catalina Pan was the lone Montreat player to secure multiple victories in singles action. After falling in the round of 32, Pan captured back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket. In the round of 16, the Montevideo, Uruguay native advanced via an opponent forfeit. Then, in the consolation quarterfinals, Pan coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph. The freshman's journey ultimately ended in the following round when she withdrew.
Annika Rojas narrowly lost her championship bracket round of 32 match (6-2, 4-6 [10-6]), but she was able to bounce back with a forfeit in the consolation round of 16 when her opponent withdrew.
Both of Montreat's doubles pairings suffered defeat in the round of 16.
