COLUMBIA, Ky.— Playing against a ranked Lindsey Wilson College side for the second time this season, the Montreat women's tennis team exacted revenge on the Blue Raiders Thursday afternoon, winning the rematch in Columbia, Ky., 6-1. With the win, the Cavaliers now stand at 11-5 this season.
In the first matchup on Feb. 19, the then-No. 13 Blue Raiders toppled a shorthanded Montreat squad, 4-3. The Cavaliers were at full strength this time around, and they proved to be more than No. 8 Lindsey Wilson (17-2) could handle.
Montreat started its march toward victory by winning the doubles point, something they didn't do back in February.
Valerie Quiceno Ibarguen and
Sofia Hernandez Mera took the first step for the Cavaliers at No. 3, winning their doubles match in quick fashion, 6-1. Meanwhile, in the No. 1 spot,
Stephanie Petit and
Carol Reis clinched the doubles point with an efficient 6-2 victory.
The Cavaliers proved to be just as lethal in singles play, winning five of the six matches, most of which came in straight sets. Quiceno Ibarguen dropped just two games in her 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 to start things off, while Petit nearly matched her teammate's efficiency by dropping three total games in a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Lindsey Wilson's top-ranked singles player, No. 29 Alexandra Parra.
No. 32 Lucia Mora grabbed the Blue Raiders' lone point at No. 3 to pull within 3-1, but the Cavaliers were undeterred as they rattled off wins in straight sets in the bottom three matchups. Playing in the No. 4 spot,
Nicole Bueno earned a 6-1 first-set win before her opponent retired. Then, at No. 5, Reis squeezed out two close sets, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, to make it 5-1 Cavaliers. Lastly,
Mariam Bayatyan utilized a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 to help Montreat finish off Lindsey Wilson with a resounding 6-1 team triumph.
Montreat's victory on Thursday not only extended its own winning streak to eight matches, but it also snapped Lindsey Wilson's 14-match winning streak, handing the Blue Raiders their first loss since Feb. 18.
The Montreat women's tennis team closes out its regular season on Saturday with one final home match against Point University. Doubles play begins at 1:00 p.m. in Montreat, N.C.
