LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.— The Montreat women's tennis team went on the road to face the No. 1-ranked team in the NAIA, the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies, Friday afternoon. Although the Cavaliers fought hard, the home team notched a 7-0 victory, moving the Cavs to 2-2 on the year.
In doubles play, GGC (4-0) utilized wins at all three slots to go up 1-0 in the match. Despite the loss, the No. 3-ranked pairing in the nation,
Stephanie Petit and
Valerie Quiceno Ibarguen, won five games against the top doubles duo in the country.
The ranked matchups continued in singles competition as the Cavaliers pushed against a dominant Georgia Gwinnett squad. Three different Montreat players captured at least four games in sets, while
Carolina Reis and Petit each claimed eight games in 6-4, 6-4 defeats. Quiceno Ibarguen battled to a 6-5 scoreline in set one of her match prior to retiring. Ultimately, the GGC lineup, which featured five athletes ranked in the top 21 in the nation, swept all six singles spots to win 7-0.
