Petit, Quiceno Ibarguen Collect Regional Championships

RICHMOND, Ky.— Stephanie Petit captured the singles regional championship, while the duo of Petit and Valerie Quiceno Ibarguen collected the doubles title at the ITA NAIA Women's Southeast Regional Tournament over the weekend.
 
Play began on Thursday with the duo defeating their opponent from Campbellsville in the second round of doubles competition, 8-1. Annika Beckmann and Sofia Hernandez beat their first-round opposition 8-2, while Sofia Rojas and Nicole Bueno handled Thomas More's pair with ease (8-1).
 
With victories by both Petit/Quiceno Ibarguen and Bueno/Rojas in the quarterfinals, the two would meet in the semifinal round, a matchup that the No. 1 pairing in the nation (Petit/Quiceno Ibarguen) dominated by a score of 8-1. The doubles team then recorded an 8-2 triumph in the final to win the doubles championship.
 
In singles play, all three Cavaliers competing on the first day won their matches. Beckmann trounced her opponent 6-0, 6-1, Rojas edged her opposition 7-6, 6-0 and Hernandez claimed a comeback victory in three sets (4-6, 7-5, 10-6).
 
Quiceno Ibarguen notched a trio of triumphs before bowing out in the semis. The senior defeated her second-round opponent (6-2, 6-2) prior to an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win in the round of 16 and a 6-3, 6-1 win in the quarterfinals.
 
Petit capped off her regional tournament in style, running through the bracket with straight-set victories. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native dropped only one game in the round of 32, registered a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over her teammate, Bueno, in the round of 16, bested her opponent 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the final with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. In the regional tournament championship match, Petit did not drop a game, winning 6-0, 6-0 to claim the title over No. 3 Teodora Jovic of Union.
 
The tennis team now competes in the Emily McNall Tournament hosted by UNC-Asheville on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 25 and 26).
