TEMPE, Ariz.— Early Tuesday afternoon, the matchups for the NAIA Women's Southeast Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships were announced. The Cavaliers, who will compete in the tournament at Eastern Kentucky University in both singles and doubles play from Thursday through Sunday, notched several favorable seeds in the draw.
Stephanie Petit, the No. 1 player in the region, received the No. 1 seed in the bracket, consequentially moving to the round of 32 automatically via a first-round bye.
Valerie Quiceno Ibarguen, who earned the No. 2 seed, also moved to the second round, which begins on Friday.
Nicole Bueno is the other Montreat player who received a seed in the singles bracket, collecting the No. 9 place in the draw to advance to second-round action, as well.
Sofia Hernandez Mera,
Annika Beckmann and
Sofia Rojas Osorio each compete for the Cavaliers in the round of 64 on Thursday.
In doubles play, the top-rated doubles team in the country in Petit and Quiceno Ibarguen captured the No. 1 seed, advancing to the round of 16 on Thursday, while Bueno and Rojas, the No. 5 seed in the bracket, also avoided a first-round matchup.
"It is encouraging that five of our nine entries got seeded- with two one seeds and a two seed," started head coach
Mic Moore. "There is a lot of talent from schools in this tournament and we have targets on our back. I am excited to see our girls compete again under pressure."
Hernandez and Beckmann kick off action for the Cavs in doubles play in Richmond, Ky. on Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
