NIOTA, Tenn. — The Montreat College women's golf team closed out the month of March with the TWU Spring Invite, a two-day tournament hosted by Tennessee Wesleyan University at Springbrook Golf & Country Club in Niota, Tenn. Playing 18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday, the Cavaliers combined for a two-round score of 755, good for sixth out of six squads.
Overall, the Cavs finished just four strokes behind Roane State Community College for fifth place.
Day one ended with Montreat standing in fifth as a team. The Cavaliers' four scorers, led by
Reese Coltrane, combined for a 381 on Monday. Coltrane entered the clubhouse tied for 17
th out of 33 golfers, utilizing four pars to achieve her score of 90 through 18 holes.
Hannah Stewart,
Abbey Coyle and
Sara Rothrock also broke 100 during round one. The trio wrapped up the first-round scoring for the Cavs, turning in a 94, a 98 and a 99, respectively. Stewart capitalized on three pars to land in 23
rd on the individual leaderboard midway through the tournament. Coyle carded a pair of pars to tie for 24
th, while Rothrock's three pars enabled her to stand in 26
th with 18 holes remaining.
Chloe Peters also registered three pars on day one as she needed 106 strokes to conclude the opening round in 30
th.
The Cavaliers shaved seven shots off their total from round one to round two, turning in a 374 on Tuesday. Coltrane proved to be a big part of that improvement, as she needed six fewer strokes to complete 18 holes on day two. The Lincolnton, N.C. native tallied eight pars and shot 4-over-par on the back nine. Her score of 84 brought her tournament total to 174. Coltrane climbed five spots up the individual leaderboard and ended the event tied for 12
th overall.
Coyle also made a six-stroke improvement between rounds, utilizing four pars to help achieve a 92. The score enhancement meant Coyle entered the clubhouse in 25
th with a 190 in total.
Stewart (27
th; 197), Rothrock (28
th; 201) and Peters (29
th; 202) ended the TWU Spring Invite in consecutive placements on the leaderboard. Peters and Rothrock rounded out the second-round scoring for Montreat with a 96 and a 102, respectively. Stewart shot a 103 on the final day. Peters secured the Cavaliers' only birdie of the tournament, doing so with a three on hole No. 7.
