Cycling capitalizes on racing close to home

ZIRCONIA, N.C.— The Montreat College cycling team completed the season's second weekend of mountain bike competition on Saturday and Sunday, doing so in Zirconia, N.C. at the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC) Rumble at Rock Creek. Brevard College and Warren Wilson College co-hosted the event, and the Cavaliers capitalized on racing close to home.

Sarah McCallister delivered Montreat's top two placements of the weekend on Saturday. In the dual slalom race, McCallister topped her fellow competitors in the women's C category. The Birmingham, Ala. native won the race, besting two additional riders. Meanwhile, McCallister concluded 21st out of 32 cyclists in the cross country women's A category. Clara Overholser joined McCallister in the cross country event, ending as the 29th racer to cross the finish line.

Lucas Zeringue also took his turn at the dual slalom, doing so in the men's A category. Going up against 44 other competitors, Zeringue wrapped up his race 39th overall.

Back at it on Sunday, Zeringue improved on his placement against a similarly sized downhill men's A field. Thanks to his time of 2:24.223, the Jacksonville, Fla. native finished 22nd out of 42 riders.

Like Zeringue, McCallister raced on both days. The sophomore ultimately placed 26th of 31 in the short track cross country women's A category.

"This was a great week of racing," said head coach Doug Cline. "All our riders moved up to the A group and competed at a hard, world-class venue. Lucas Zeringue placed in the 20s in a large downhill class. Sarah McCallister loved the hard, mountainous course and challenged herself with one of her best finishes. She also claimed first on the dual slalom course. Clara Overholser moved up to the A class for cross country, challenging herself and competing well on a difficult track."
