Montreat drops interim tag, names McCue-Long head softball coach

MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat College Athletics Department is dropping the interim tag from Kelsey McCue-Long's title. According to an announcement made last week, McCue-Long is officially the Cavaliers' full-time head softball coach after serving one month in an interim capacity.

"We are grateful and excited Coach McCue-Long has accepted this position," said Director of Athletics Garrett Jones. "Coach McCue-Long has played an integral role in the program's recent success and is well-positioned to carry forward the momentum, energy and mission of our softball program."

No stranger to the softball team, McCue-Long spent the previous two seasons as the Cavs' pitching coach. Under McCue-Long's leadership, the Montreat pitching staff saw massive improvement. After recording a team ERA of 4.75 during the year prior to her arrival, the Cavs registered a 3.64 ERA in 2024 and a 2.99 ERA in 2025. The Broad Top City, Penn. native also coached the NAIA's 2025 saves leader, Victoria Alcantar, last season.

In addition to achieving 30-plus wins in back-to-back years, McCue-Long aided Montreat in snagging a 7-3 victory over No. 21 Midland University this past spring. The triumph proved to be the Cavaliers' first over a ranked opponent since 2018.

"I'm honored to continue working with our dedicated staff and talented student-athletes as we strive toward an AAC championship," McCue-Long shared. "We remain committed to the vision set by Coach Corbin Weeks over the past two years, with a continued focus on developing our players both on and off the field."

Prior to working at Montreat, McCue-Long spent five months as Spartanburg Methodist College's pitching coach.

McCue-Long also has coaching experience at the prep level in Simpsonville, S.C. From 2021 through 2023, she acted as Woodmont High School's varsity assistant coach and junior varsity head coach. During that same time frame, she served as the director, owner and 18U head coach of Elite Diamondcats, where she helped more than 15 players secure spots at schools across the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA. McCue-Long spent 2019-2021 coaching at Ralph Chandler Middle School as well.

A 2014 graduate of Mount Aloysius College in Cresson, Penn., McCue-Long played softball for two years while earning her associate's degree in nursing. She is currently working on her bachelor's degree in sports management at Spartanburg Methodist.

McCue-Long lives with her husband, Scott, and their two children.
