Garrett Jones AD Headshot 2022-23

Garrett Jones

In July of 2022, Garrett Jones was promoted from his position of Montreat College head men's basketball coach and Assistant Athletic Director of Eligibility to Director of Athletics. He enters his fourth year as Director of Athletics in 2025-26.

COACHING AT MONTREAT

Jones completed seven seasons as the head coach for the Montreat College men's basketball program after his initial hiring in 2015. In his seven seasons as head coach, Jones and the Cavaliers rattled off a 128-79 (87-60 AAC) record while eclipsing the 20-win mark four times.

On the national landscape, the Cavaliers qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in consecutive years during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. During those same seasons, Montreat finished as runner-up in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season and tournament. Then, during the 2021-22 season, the Cavs appeared in the NAIA Men's Basketball Opening Round after finishing as the AAC regular season and tournament runner-up.

Additionally, several Cavaliers went on to play basketball professionally following their time under Jones, including Austin Butler and, most recently, Jaja Davis. Thanks to Jones' leadership, Montreat amassed numerous conference honors, specifically over his last four years as a coach. During that span, the Cavs notched 12 all-conference performances, a pair of AAC All-Freshman Team and AAC All-Defensive Team honorees, the AAC Player of the Year, the AAC Newcomer of the Year, the AAC Freshman of the Year, an NAIA Third Team All-American and an honorable mention All-American.

PRIOR TO MONTREAT

Jones came to Montreat after serving as an assistant coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) in Waxahachie, Texas the previous four years.

While at SAGU, Jones was part of a coaching staff that took a program that had gone fourteen years without a winning season and turned them into a national power. Their winning seasons were highlighted by three straight appearances at the NAIA Division I National Tournament (2013-2015). Jones' 2013 squad had quite the season, going 33-5 and advancing to the NAIA Division I National Championship Game. The following season, Jones helped lead the team to a 26-6 record and a season that culminated with another top-10 national ranking.

Prior to his arrival at SAGU, Jones served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Oklahoma Wesleyan University, from 2009-2011. During his time at OWU, Jones helped guide the team to back-to-back NAIA Division II National Championship appearances.

While completing his undergraduate degree at OWU, Jones was a four-year member of the men's basketball team. Under the guidance of head coach Donnie Bostwick, Jones and his teammates helped turn around the program at OWU, and their three year run of NAIA tournament appearances culminated in a 35-2 record and NAIA Division II National Championship title in 2009.
