BOWLING GREEN, Ky.— The Montreat women's wrestling team competed at the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Women's Wrestling Championships on Friday in Bowling Green, Ky. Not only did the Cavaliers secure their best finish as a squad in program history, but
Morgan Repasky also notched an at-large berth to the NAIA Women's Wrestling Championships next month.
Scoring 24.0 points as a squad, Montreat ended seventh out of 12 MSC programs. The Cavs totaled 5.5 more points than Siena Heights University but 10 fewer points than Lourdes University. Life University won the team title with 221.5 points.
Repasky went 2-2 on Friday, capturing fifth-place in the 103-lb weight class in the process. After a bye advanced her to the quarterfinals, Repasky suffered a 9-2 decision defeat versus the NAIA's No. 9-ranked wrestler. The Marion, N.C. native followed up another bye with a swift pin, needing just 41 seconds to snag the win.
A 12-0 tech fall loss against the nation's No. 8-ranked competitor moved Repasky into the fifth-place bout. There, she rattled off another pin, this time in merely 34 seconds. While the freshman landed just one placement shy of an automatic bid to the national championships, her tournament effort coupled with her season-long performance proved good enough to garner an at-large bid.
Nicole Lewis,
Annastasia Skoda and
Uriah Peters-Gutierrez each went 1-2 during their tournament journeys. Like Repasky, Lewis also ended fifth, doing so in the 160-lb bracket. Lewis responded well to defeats against the No. 1- and No. 15-ranked wrestlers with a pin in 2:31 in the fifth-place bout.
Peters-Gutierrez faced the NAIA's top wrestler as well. Competing at 145, the Goose Creek, S.C. native answered her defeat via fall with a pin of her own. Meanwhile, Skoda registered a fall in 44 seconds for her lone triumph at 131.
"I am very proud of how the team competed this weekend," said head coach
Koby Reyes. "They've been improving daily in the practice room, and it was great to see it from the corner. Excited to get back to work on Monday and finish the season strong."

The Mid-South Conference also unveiled its All-Academic Team and Champions of Character Team this week. Five Cavaliers met the qualifications for MSC All-Academic Team status:
Mia Buckner,
Marissa Delacruz,
Audrey Gribble, Lewis and
Charlotte Wheeler. Repasky was named to the Champions of Character Team.
A student-athlete is eligible for MSC All-Academic Team recognition if she maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale while also having attended her current institution for a full calendar year. The student-athletes honored on the Champions of Character Team were nominated by their coaches based on their leadership on campus and in the community, all while demonstrating the five core character values of the NAIA.
Repasky and the Montreat women's wrestling team now turn their attention to the third annual NAIA Women's Wrestling Championships, which are slated for March 14-15 in Park City, Kan.
