Women’s golf competes in penultimate fall contest

GAFFNEY, S.C.— Montreat College's women's golf program competed in the Pioneers Fall Invitational held at the Cherokee National Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday. The two-round event was hosted by Spartanburg Methodist College. Out of the six teams that participated, the Cavaliers finished in fourth place. A total of 33 collegiate golfers submitted scores for the 36-hole tournament.

Montreat finished the event with a team score of 747. The Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers edged out the Cavs, finishing in third place with 734 total shots. The Cavaliers beat the fifth-place Bluefield University Rams by 50 strokes in the competition.

Three Montreat golfers tied for the squad's best score after the first 18 holes. Reese Coltrane, Hannah Stewart and Abbey Coyle all carded a 91 in their opening rounds. Coltrane notched two birdies and two pars. Stewart's card featured five pars. Coyle finished round one with three pars. Sara Rothrock shot a 97 and had a par across her initial 18 holes. Chloe Peters hit two pars and recorded a 106.

During the second round of the event, 91 was also the best score. This time, just two Cavaliers achieved the mark. Both Coltrane and Stewart showed consistency with their dead-even tallies. Coltrane holed five pars and Stewart hit three. Behind the pair, Coyle concluded her tournament with a 95 and sank three pars. Rothrock registered a 100 in her final round. Peters finished with a score of 102, including a par.

Individually, Coltrane and Stewart both tied for 14th position after two rounds. Right behind them, Coyle placed in a tie for 16th place. Sara Rothrock ended tied for 23rd, and Peters rounded out the Cavs with a 28th-place finish.

"We did not play as well as we would have hoped this week, but there were many positives to take away," said head coach John Sullivan. "We will continue to focus on ways to improve."
