MONTREAT, N.C.— Against tough nationally-recognized Reinhardt University Eagles teams, the Montreat men's and women's tennis squads fought valiantly, with the women sweeping the (RV) Eagles 7-0 and the men falling to the No. 5-ranked team, 6-1. Women's tennis remained perfect in AAC play with the win, holding a 5-4 (3-0 AAC) record overall for the year, while the men dropped to 2-8 (1-2 AAC) on the season.
In doubles play for the women, the top doubles pair in the nation, Stephanie Petit and Valerie Quiceno Ibarguen, notched a 6-3 win and Sofia Hernandez and Nicole Bueno secured the doubles point with a 6-4 victory.
The Cavaliers then went on to earn triumphs in straight sets in all six singles matches. Petit, the No. 2 singles player in the NAIA, won 6-2, 6-1 over her opponent, while Quiceno Ibarguen, who ranks seventh in the country individually, claimed victory 6-1, 6-4.
Bueno got the win 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 and Hernandez allowed her opposition only four game wins to capture the matchup 6-3, 6-1. Sofia Rojas did the same at No. 5, taking down her counterpart 6-1, 6-3, while Annika Beckmann closed out the sweep with an 8-3 victory.
On the men's side, Ryan Little and Nicolas Lopez Sanchez collected a 6-4 triumph at No. 2; however, the Cavs could not win the doubles point as both the other doubles teams fell in tiebreaks.
Little rallied for the triumph over his opposition at No. 4 singles in three sets after falling in the first. The sophomore went down 1-0 with a 6-4 loss before rebounding to win the second set 7-5 and the third 10-8.
Despite a tremendous effort from the Cavs on the day, Montreat earned just the one individual win following a pair of three-set defeats in singles play.
The tennis teams will now travel to SCAD Atlanta for a match on Tuesday.
