CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The fifth-seeded Montreat College men's tennis team earned a 4-2 win on Monday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament against the fourth-seeded University of Pikeville Bears. The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point with victories in two of three matches before securing singles wins on the second, third and fifth courts to seal the result. With the win, Montreat improved to 8-12 (3-4 AAC), while Pikeville moved to 6-6 (4-3 AAC) for the season.
The Cavaliers captured the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
Lucas Descalzi and
Vitor Monteiro posted a 6-4 win in the second position, while
Fabrizio Moreno and
Youssef Idboufous added a 6-3 result at the third spot.
Julian Stolevski and
Paul Saemann fell 6-2 on the top court.
In singles action, Monteiro pushed the Cavaliers further ahead with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 result at the No. 2 position. Descalzi added a three-set 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the third spot before Idboufous clinched the team result with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 5, grabbing the decisive fourth point.
Joaquin Hernandez and Saemann dropped decisions in the first and sixth flights by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0, respectively. Moreno competed at the fourth position before play was halted with him trailing 7-6 (7-5), 4-3.
The Cavaliers now turn their focus to the semifinals, where they will face top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan University tomorrow afternoon with a spot in the AAC Championship on the line. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Champions Club Tennis Complex in Chattanooga, Tenn.
