SWANNANOA, N.C. — The Montreat College men's tennis team closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 4-2 win over nonconference opponent Methodist University. The Cavaliers earned all four points in singles play to secure the result over their NCAA Division III opposition. With the outcome, Montreat moved to 7-12 on the year, while Methodist fell to 12-6.
Montreat dropped the doubles point after picking up one win in the lineup.
Youssef Idboufous and
Fabrizio Moreno earned a 6-1 victory at No. 3, while the duos of
Julian Stolevski and
Paul Saemann, along with
Lucas Descalzi and
Vitor Monteiro, fell 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
In singles action, Monteiro put the Cavaliers on the board with a straight-sets win on the top court, taking a 6-4, 6-2 decision over the No. 37-ranked singles player. Descalzi followed with a strong three-set performance at position two, rebounding after dropping the opening set to secure a 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory.
Moreno added another point at flight four with a 6-4, 6-3 result, and Idboufous clinched the match on court five with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win.
Joaquin Hernandez fell at No. 3 via a 1-6, 3-6 scoreline, while Stolevski's match on court six went unfinished. The Hendersonville, N.C. native was leading by a narrow 6-5 margin in the first set when the action halted.
Montreat now turns its focus toward a rematch against the University of Pikeville in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament. The fifth-seeded Cavs are scheduled to take on the fourth-seeded Bears on Monday, April 20, at 2 p.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
