Cavaliers end as runners-up in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — The Montreat College men's golf team continued its strong run of play on Tuesday with a runner-up finish out of 11 squads at the Northeast Tennessee Spring Shootout, hosted by Milligan University. Additionally, two Cavaliers claimed top-five placements on the individual leaderboard, resulting in a pair of All-Tournament Team nods.

Playing two rounds at Johnson City Country Club, the Cavs carded a 298 in round one before improving by a stroke during round two. Montreat's score of 595 was just three shots back of tournament champion Walters State Community College, as well as one stroke better than Midway University.

Alex Murphy tied for second out of 60 golfers and picked up All-Tournament Team recognition for the second event in a row. The Monroe, N.C. native delivered a 1-under-par 71 in his opening round and a 2-over-par 74 across his latter 18 holes to land in second place (145). Murphy's five-birdie, one-eagle performance fell just two shots shy of forcing a playoff for the individual title.

Austin Lineberger ended just two strokes back and two places behind his teammate, tying for fourth with a 147. The sophomore's outing also garnered All-Tournament Team status as he racked up six birdies over 36 holes. Lineberger was just 1-over-par in round one and 2-over-par in round two, displaying high levels of consistency across the marathon day.

Matt Cardaropoli (T-27th; 155), Colton Clevenger (T-33rd; 156) and Cooper Crump (T-38th; 158) finished within close range of each other heading into the clubhouse. Cardaropoli registered one birdie and an 83 through 18 holes, but he turned in two birdies and an even-par score of 72 during the second round to climb up the individual leaderboard. Clevenger was steady across his two rounds of play, shooting a 79 and a 77 while birding hole No. 3 twice. Crump wrapped up the action for the Cavs with five birdies, a 3-over-par 75 and an 83.
