MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — The Montreat College men's golf team sent six freshmen to compete at the Bill Gardner Fall Preview, hosted by Walters State Community College, on Monday and Tuesday in Morristown, Tenn. Playing a total of 54 holes at The Country Club, the Cavaliers' young squad combined for a score of 957, earning 13
th-place out of 16 teams.
Montreat officially ended 19 shots back of Carson-Newman University and 32 strokes ahead of the University of South Carolina-Sumter. Roane State Community College won the Bill Gardner Fall Preview with a final tally of 892.
Kenan Kim led the Cavs into the clubhouse after round one as the squad totaled a 323 during its initial 18 holes on Monday. Kim capitalized on six birdies to turn in a 5-over-par 77.
Luke Winter wrapped up his first round with two birdies and an 80.
Jaxon Henegar and
Britton Johnson each carded an 83 to open the tournament, with the latter also notching a birdie along the way.
Improving as the day progressed, Montreat's scoring foursome registered a 319 to close out day one's busy slate. Kim continued to impress, delivering 12 pars and two birdies to shoot a 3-over-par 75. Henegar and Johnson matched each other's scorecard after round two as well. A native of Noblesville, Ind., Henegar eagled hole No. 1 and tacked on two additional birdies to tally an 81. Johnson also etched an 81 thanks to 10 pars. Winter and
Landon Cook shot 82s to wrap up Monday, with the former accumulating four birdies and the latter scoring one.
The Cavaliers shaved another four strokes off their team total in round three, shooting a 315. Winter and Henegar paced the squad on Tuesday during the final round of play. Like Henegar did yesterday, Winter eagled the first hole before contributing three birdies to achieve his score. Henegar also notched a trio of birdies, with all three occurring on the back nine. Cook and Kim closed out the Cavs' scoring account for the tournament, carding an 80 and an 81, respectively. Both golfers recorded one birdie across their final 18 holes.
Kim delivered Montreat's best finish on the individual leaderboard, tying for 37
th out of 89 participants with his three-round mark of 233. Winter (T-56
th; 239) and Henegar (T-58
th; 241) also landed inside the top 60 of the field. Johnson tied for 69
th with his 246, while Cook (250) and
Ham Hohman (253) ended back-to-back in 76
th and 77
th, respectively. Hohman competed as an individual on Monday and Tuesday.
"We struggled this week on the greens, but overall, the guys kept a good attitude, and that's what matters most when you field six freshmen," said Head Coach
John Sullivan. "We've got a couple of weeks off to prepare for conference, so we'll focus on areas that need improvement."

After four consecutive weeks of competition, the Montreat College men's golf team now takes a few weeks off before returning to action on Oct. 26-28 for the AAC Fall Preview at Barnsley Resort in Adairsville, Ga.
