WALESKA, Ga. — According to a release from the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) office on Monday afternoon, Montreat College's
Vitor Monteiro is this season's newest AAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week. The honor marks the first league recognition of Monteiro's Cavalier career, as well as the first for the men's tennis program in just over a calendar year.
While the Cavs went 0-2 as a squad against (RV) Milligan University and No. 23 SCAD Atlanta, Monteiro picked up four wins across singles and doubles play. In all four matches, Monteiro competed in the No. 2 position.
Battling the Buffaloes, Monteiro and
Lucas Descalzi, his doubles partner, cruised to a 6-1 triumph over their opposition. The freshman then coasted to a 6-4, 6-1 straight-sets sweep in his singles clash. Monteiro's matches versus the nationally-ranked Bees were closer in score, but the Rio de Janeiro native still came out on top. Teaming up with Descalzi again, Monteiro captured a 6-4 doubles win before corralling a 6-3, 7-5 victory on the singles courts.
