SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — After inclement weather canceled the initial day of competition at the Stitch Golf Sandhills Flyers Intercollegiate, the Montreat College men's golf team returned to action on Tuesday with a single-round, 18-hole score of 310. Thanks to the strong showing at Longleaf Golf & Family Club, the Cavaliers tied for fourth out of 11 programs, marking their second consecutive tournament with a top-five finish.
Montreat's team total of 310 matched Columbia College in Southern Pines, N.C. The Cavs ended one stroke better than Methodist University and four shots back of the tournament host, Sandhills Community College.
Two Cavaliers turned in 77s to tie for 14
th on the individual leaderboard.
Cooper Crump notched three birdies and 10 pars to reach his tally, while
Alex Murphy registered a pair of birdies to go with his 10 pars.
Matt Cardaropoli and
Austin Lineberger concluded play just one stroke back of Crump and Murphy. The former birdied three of his final four holes on the back nine, and the latter captured a birdie on the front nine before carding an eagle on No. 16. Tying for 24
th overall, Cardaropoli and Lineberger closed out the scoring account for Montreat.
Junior
Colton Clevenger also competed for the Cavs on Tuesday, shooting an 83 and recording one birdie and eight pars to tie for 43
rd out of 60 golfers.
Shayn Tarolla,
Philip Brown and
Luke Hood played as individuals at the Stitch Golf Sandhills Flyers Intercollegiate. A pair of holes under par helped carry Tarolla to an 80, good for a tie for 33
rd. Brown and Hood finished tied for 53
rd and in 57
th, respectively. The former turned in one birdie, while the latter scored a trio of pars.
"We're seeing continued improvement from week to week," said Head Coach
John Sullivan. "If we can eliminate some of the careless mistakes and clean up the course management, the full potential of this team will really begin to show. We're trending in the right direction."
