WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— The Montreat College men's track & field team traveled to JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday and Saturday for the Camel City Sprints and Camel City Distance meets. With 14 entries and 12 events across the two days, the Cavaliers corralled two wins, a trio of national standards, four school records and six personal bests.
Friday's top performance for the Cavs came during the Camel City Sprints' distance medley relay. Placing fourth out of five squads, the Montreat foursome of
Nathan Cremin,
Jordan Pippin,
Brock Lauer and
Ryan Stade delivered the NAIA's second-best time of the season and the 18
th-fastest DMR time in NAIA men's indoor track & field history. Needing just 9:59.13 to complete the relay, the Cavaliers shaved 6.29 seconds off their school record and easily met the NAIA 'A' standard.
Additionally, two Cavs combined for three personal bests at the Camel City Sprints.
Drew Bryant unleashed his top career efforts in the 60m hurdles and the 200m dash. Bryant ended 25
th of 34 with his 9.12-second 60m hurdles time, as well as 15
th out of 62 sprinters thanks to his 22.48-second showing. Meanwhile,
Cameron Rice trimmed 0.31 seconds off his personal-best 200m mark, crossing the finish line in 22.47 seconds to place 22
nd out of 28 seeded runners.
The school records and top-notch performances continued at the Camel City Distance on Saturday. Cremin made program history in the 1000m, slashing 1.57 seconds off the school record and 9.86 seconds off his personal best. The Limerick, Ireland native turned in an 'A' standard time of 2:24.39, which ranks first in the NAIA this season, as well as sixth-quickest in NAIA men's indoor track & field history. Cremin ultimately won the 1000m event among a pool of 26 participants.
Not to be outdone, Stade obliterated the school record and his own personal best in the 5000m. Finishing first out of 45 competitors, Stade cut 6.30 seconds off Montreat's top showing and 25.05 seconds off his career effort with an 'A' standard time of 14:10.52. Stade's 5k ranks second in the NAIA this year and 10
th-fastest in NAIA men's indoor track & field history.
Hugo Petat-Hemono also delivered a school record on Saturday. The Amilly, France native concluded his 800m in 1:55.29, nearly one-tenth of a second better than the program's prior best time. The performance was also good enough for 21
st out of 64 athletes.
Montreat's final personal best from the weekend occurred during the Camel City Distance's 3000m race. While Lauer (16
th; 8:42.00) and
Ronald Way (24
th; 8:54.27) placed inside the top-25 of the 56-runner field, it was
Elijah Eppley (33
rd; 9:05.41) who cut more than 10 seconds off his top career showing.
