VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.— The Montreat men's golf team traveled to Virginia Beach, Va. for the Marlins Invitational, an event hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University. Playing on Monday and Tuesday at Cypress Point Country Club, the Cavaliers racked up a team score of 657 across two rounds, good for ninth out of 11 squads.
As a team, the Cavs turned in a 324, the ninth-best score during the opening round. Sophomore
Alex Murphy sat in a tie for 10
th individually through 18 holes thanks to his 4-over-par 76. Murphy utilized 12 pars and one birdie to achieve his score.
Four of
Austin Lineberger's 10 pars came during his final four holes. The Crouse, N.C. native carded an 80 during day one, leaving him tied for 30
th out of 68 golfers.
Colton Clevenger notched one fewer birdie as he registered an 81 on Monday.
Luke Hood rounded out the scoring for Montreat during the initial round. The St. Andrews University transfer needed 87 strokes to get through his first 18 holes.
James Griffiths also competed for the Cavaliers as he concluded his day with a 127.
The Cavs needed nine additional strokes on Tuesday, wrapping up the tournament with a 333 during the second round. Murphy did his part in aiding Montreat's tally, besting his score from Monday with a 1-over-par 73 across the final 18 holes. Thanks to his stellar showing, Murphy ended the tournament tied for third with a total of 144.
Clevenger proved to be on his game throughout the second round. The sophomore from Hendersonville, N.C. recorded three birdies and 10 pars to garner a 77. With the strong final round, Clevenger landed in a tie for 20
th on the individual leaderboard.
Lineberger turned in a 93 on Tuesday, landing himself in a tie for 57
th for the tournament. Meanwhile, Hood's score of 90 on day two placed him in 63
rd overall. Griffiths closed out the action for the Cavaliers with a 105 and a 68
th-place finish.
