WALESKA, Ga.— Amayia Hernandez dominated the competition last week, and she has the honors to prove it. According to a release from the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) on Monday, Montreat's starting center fielder is the newest WinWon AAC Softball Player of the Week. This marks the initial such honor in Hernandez's Cavalier career, as well as the first for Montreat this season.
A native of Sterling, Ill., Hernandez continued to display her skill with the bat. The upperclassman slashed .471/.524/.706, driving in 12 runs while scoring five of her own. Hernandez totaled eight hits in 17 at-bats, one of which left the ballpark and another of which went for two bases. The Daytona State College transfer also swiped four bags, drew one walk and reached twice via hit-by-pitch. Playing in center field, Hernandez was a perfect 16-for-16 on her defensive chances.
Last week, Montreat notched a 5-1 record during its spring break trip to Florida. Aided by Hernandez's play, the Cavs picked up a 7-3 win over No. 21 Midland University, their first victory over a ranked team since March 13, 2018.
Hernandez is currently tied for the AAC lead with six home runs. She also ranks third in the conference with 24 RBIs and fifth with a .449 batting average.
