JACKSONVILLE, Fla.— The Montreat College clay target shooting team spent Nov. 7-9 in Jacksonville, Fla. for the ACUI Lower East Coast Conference Championships. Competing for three days across a total of six disciplines, the Cavaliers racked up enough hit targets to place seventh out of 13 total institutions.
Several current or former national championship programs participated as part of a loaded competition field. Overall, the Cavs struck 1,948 targets, 170 fewer than Georgia Southern University, who won the event. In the classic all around, Montreat ended sixth of 13.
Newcomer
Madison Mishio stole the show over the three-day event. The Bedford, Texas native won the women's high overall title, drilling 395 targets over of the course of six shoots. Mishio finished nine targets better than the runner-up as she notched five top-10 placements. The freshman concluded first in doubles skeet (48 targets), second in sporting clays (74 targets), second in super sporting (46 targets), tied for sixth in American trap (91 targets) and tied for seventh in American skeet (96 targets). Mishio's 46-target effort in super sporting was a personal best according to head coach
Hub Powell.
The Cavaliers delivered impressive marks in the classic all around as well. Mishio also won the women's classic all around. According to Coach Powell,
Autumn Wall joined Mishio on the leaderboard as she placed third. Meanwhile,
Jacob VanNess took home the men's classic all around title to highlight a trip filled with award-winning performances.
Several other shooting efforts stood out from the ACUI Lower East Coast Conference Championships. VanNess and
Jonah Wyatt each hit 98 of 100 targets on Saturday in American skeet.
Maverick Smith (96 targets) and
Jacob Eifler (96 targets) achieved personal bests in the event, too. One day later, Van Ness broke 97 of 100 targets in American trap.
"I could not be prouder of the strong performance of our team during the Jacksonville regionals," Powell shared. "Not only were my shooters strong, but we distinguished ourselves on many fronts. Madison demonstrated that she is a force in our competitive space, and
Jacob VanNess proved to be a serious threat. Many PRs were earned, and it all bodes well for nationals this spring. Go Cavs!"
