Cavs prepare for nationals with Spring Lower East Coast Championships

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Montreat College clay target shooting team made the trip to Savannah, Ga. last month for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Spring Lower East Coast Conference Championships. After placing seventh during the fall edition of the competition, the Cavaliers finished eighth on Feb. 6-8 despite squaring off against twice as many squads this go-around.

Only 13 programs competed in Jacksonville, Fla. during November, but 25 teams threw their proverbial hats in the ring last month. The Cavs concluded eighth out of 25 programs on the high overall leaderboard, drilling 1,926 total targets. Montreat finished 194 targets back of Georgia Southern University, which won both the fall and spring renditions of the competition. The Cavaliers placed ninth with 1,321 targets in the classic all around.

Like she did in Florida, Madison Mishio led the way for her squad down in Georgia. The freshman from Bedford, Texas delivered Montreat's lone podium effort of the weekend, ending second in the ladies' doubles skeet. Mishio struck 47 of 50 targets during her performance, tied for 12th-most regardless of gender. In the end, Mishio placed 13th on the women's high overall leaderboard with 368, as well as 14th in the classic all around disciplines with a 255.

On the men's side, Connor Bruning wrapped up the classic all around competition in 37th after breaking 269 targets. Meanwhile, Ahren Muehleisen finished 59th in the high overall with a score of 382.

"This was a more challenging tournament for us—we were dealing with internal changes, challenging weather and other interesting events, but the team powered through and competed well," said Head Coach Hub Powell. "It was good for us to have this important competition right before nationals so we could work on a couple of growth opportunities. Amid challenges, God is good. We are excited for what comes next in San Antonio."
