ADAIRSVILLE, Ga.— Montreat College's men's golf team competed in its last event of the fall on Monday and Tuesday. The Cavaliers were at the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Fall Preview held at Barnsley Resort. The University of Pikeville hosted the two-day, two-round tournament. Fourteen teams from the AAC participated, and a total of 87 golfers submitted scores. One round was pulled from the scheduled three rounds due to inclement weather, so golfers played 18 holes on each day of the event.
Montreat finished 13
th among the 14 squads with a team score of 661. Columbia College shot 10 strokes fewer than the Cavs with a 651, good for 12
th place. The Cavaliers took two fewer strokes than 14
th-place Union Commonwealth University, who finished with 663 shots.
On day one of the tournament, Montreat shot a 344 altogether. After the first round, the Cavs were in 14
th place among the 14 teams competing.
Colton Clevenger had the best round in a Montreat uniform with an 81. His round featured a birdie and eight pars. Behind him,
Austin Lineberger finished his initial 18 holes with an 83 on his card. He holed two birdies and five pars on day one.
Cooper Crump had an 87. He went out on a high note, hitting one of his three birdies on his last hole. Crump also drained three pars.
Alex Murphy finalized his day with a 93. His card saw seven pars. Rounding out the Cavs,
Shayn Tarolla carded a 100 with a birdie and four pars.
The Cavaliers came out with a fantastic team performance in round two, tallying 317 total strokes. They shaved 27 total shots off their initial 18 holes and jumped up one spot on the final team leaderboard. Clevenger and Murphy each shot a 77 in round two. Clevenger nailed three birdies and eight pars, while Murphy holed two birdies and 10 pars in his round. Trailing by just one stroke, Crump finished with a 78 on the day. His card featured a birdie and 12 pars. Lineberger took 85 strokes during his second round. Two birdies and six pars were on his scorecard. Tarolla wrapped up the Cavaliers with a 93, improving by seven shots compared to his first 18 holes. He sank a birdie and a par.
With the results, Clevenger finished in a tie with five other golfers for 30
th place. Crump tied for 58
th. Lineberger completed his event in a tie for 65
th place. Murphy finished in a tie for 70
th position. Tarolla placed 85
th after his two rounds.
After concluding the tournament, the Montreat men's golf team wrapped up its fall slate of events. The team looks to prepare for the spring section of its schedule in the coming semester.
