ADAIRSVILLE, Ga.— The Montreat men's golf team concluded its 2024 schedule with the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Direct Qualifier on Monday and Tuesday as the Cavaliers traveled to Adairsville, Ga. for three rounds of competition at Barnsley Gardens Resort. As a team through 54 holes, the Cavs placed ninth out of 13 schools.
The first 18 holes saw Montreat tie for ninth place after shooting a 334. Thanks to a trio of birdies over a 6-hole stretch,
Aaron Elmore registered an 80 to lead the team in round one.
Alex Murphy followed Elmore by carding an 84 on his initial 18, while the three remaining golfers all notched an 85.
Luca Rodrigues,
Britton Smith and
Hunter Vowell each tallied one birdie for their 85s.
The Cavaliers then improved by 10 strokes in the second round, carding a 324 to move into sole possession of ninth, one shot ahead of Bluefield, heading into Tuesday's last round. Smith utilized three birdies for the best score of any Cav (77) on the day to tie for 33
rd with 18 holes remaining. Elmore shot an 82 to also sit knotted for 33
rd position. Vowell claimed 38
th place through 36 holes due to his 79, while Rodrigues rounded out the scoring with an 86 after two birdies to hold a tie for 46
th. Murphy tallied an 89 to tie for 51
st going into Tuesday.
On the final day of action, Montreat secured its ninth-place result with a 327. Murphy recorded the lowest individual round of any Cavalier at the tournament as the Monroe, N.C. native carded a 74 with two birdies to end 38
th. Elmore used a birdie to claim 35
th, the highest finish of a Cav, thanks to his 83. Smith tied for 36
th following a third-round 84, while Vowell closed out his week with an 86 to conclude 41
st. Rodrigues grabbed a tie for 52
nd with an 88 on the final 18.
