MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat men's tennis team hosted the No. 24-ranked Reinhardt University Eagles in a top-25 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup Tuesday afternoon in Montreat, N.C. Despite a valiant effort filled with several tight sets, the Cavaliers came up on the short end of a 6-1 scoreline. With the defeat, the Cavs fell to 4-2 both overall and in AAC action.
Reinhardt (6-1, 5-0 AAC) grabbed the always important doubles point to start the match thanks to a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Hugo Rodriguez and
Elisey Kalashnikov snagged their doubles battle at No. 1 behind a 6-4 score, but the Eagles came away with the 1-0 lead nevertheless.
Wins at No. 1 (6-2, 6-2) and No. 5 (6-2, 6-3) buoyed the Eagles' advantage out to 3-0; however,
Anouar Braham kept the Cavaliers alive with a strong 6-2, 6-4 showing on the No. 2 court.
Needing just one more team point to claim the match, Reinhardt notched 2-set sweeps on the three remaining singles courts to take the top-25 match, 6-1. Of those six set wins, three required competitive tiebreaks.
The Montreat men's tennis team heads to Cleveland, Ga. this Saturday for an AAC matchup with Truett McConnell University and a non-conference battle against Indiana Wesleyan University. Doubles action against TMU is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
