BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat men's track & field team had athletes compete in the "Last One Best One" meet at Pulliam Stadium on Friday. In the end, the Cavaliers notched several event wins, recorded a plethora of podium finishes and clinched multiple national qualifiers.
The 4x800m relay team consisting of
Nathan Stamey,
Dylan Branch,
Caleb Silver and
Ruchen Blaauw highlighted the day by blowing away the school record en route to national qualification. The quartet claimed first over Milligan with an NAIA "A" standard time of 7:38.60, a mark that bested the school record by 13 seconds and currently ranks as the seventh-quickest time in the NAIA.
Jaja Davis also hit a national standard on the day, winning the shot put event with a B-standard throw of 15.39m. The senior went on to finish fifth in the discus as the top Montreat athlete after launching the implement 44.19m.
Not only did the Cavs collect national marks, but they also tallied various top-three results.
Hank Yelton and
Davian Willis-Howard went 1-2 in the 110m hurdles, concluding their races in 15.80 seconds and 16.00 seconds, respectively. In the distance events, a trio of Cavaliers impressed in the 5,000m as
William Hamilton,
Nathan Stamey and
Nathan Richards rounded out the top three finishers. Hamilton crossed in 15:10.28 to capture the win, Stamey concluded his race in 15:40.25 and Richards wasn't far behind with a time of 15:41.38.
Dustin Blevins ended the 100m dash in second place after recording a time of 10.78, just .01 off the winner.
Travion Smith finished third in the event (10.80). Smith added a second-place showing in the 200m with a time of 21.87 seconds. In the 400m dash, Silver placed second (51.50), while Christopher Upton tallied second in the 800m race (1:57.29).
In the field,
Micah Matheson recorded a victory in the pole vault after registering a season-best clearance of 4.55m.
Davis Nicol placed third with a mark of 3.95m in the event.
Maxwell White and
Gregory Curry III notched second and third in the high jump by clearing 1.80m.
Joel Simpson was the top Montreat athlete in the javelin, tossing a second-place result of 43.30m, and Gabriel Ray jumped 13.55m to end third in the triple jump.
