CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.— The Montreat men's and women's tennis teams opened the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament on Thursday, with the women taking on the No. 8 seed, the Point University Skyhawks, and the men squaring off against the No. 7 seed, the SCAD Atlanta Bees.
On the women's side, the Cavaliers entered the tournament as the defending champions and this year's regular season champions as the No. 1 seed. The No. 6 team in the NAIA made quick work of the Skyhawks. In the quarterfinal matchup, Montreat notched the doubles point before claiming four quick singles matches to advance to the semifinal round with a 5-0 victory.
In the afternoon, the men's team, the No. 2 seed in the bracket and No. 9 team in the nation, ousted the Bees from SCAD. The Cavs dispatched of the squad from Georgia thanks to a win in doubles play and a trio of singles triumphs for a 4-0 win. With the victories, the men improved to 10-8 and the women increased their record to 13-5.
Women's tennis now battles the No. 4 seed and No. 20 team in the country, SCAD Atlanta, in the AAC semifinals, which is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning at the Champions Club Tennis Complex in Chattanooga, Tenn. The men's squad will face the No. 3 seed and No. 10 team in the NAIA, Union College (Ky.), in the semifinals at 2:00 p.m.
