JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.— The Montreat men's indoor track & field team split its squad between two major competitions Thursday through Sunday: the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. and the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Montreat racked up more school records and NAIA standards against high-level competition from across the region.
Montreat sent just a handful of athletes to the Camel City Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Against competitors of all levels, the Cavaliers managed to pick up two top-10 finishes, an NAIA 'B' standard and a school record.
Ethan Stamey, who had already broken the Montreat men's indoor track & field record in the 5,000m earlier this season, managed to break his own record in Winston-Salem, N.C. Stamey finished ninth in a loaded field (15:07.88), but his time was more than good enough to set a new Cavalier record and hit the NAIA 'B' standard. Meanwhile, in the Camel City Invitational's men's 1,000m event,
Dylan Branch finished as the top Cavalier and fourth-best competitor overall with a time of 2:33.25.
The Cavaliers sent significantly more athletes to the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational at ETSU, and as a result, they earned four times as many top-10 placements.
In the heptathlon, which started on Thursday and concluded Friday,
Hank Yelton once again proved to be Montreat's clubhouse leader. Yelton, who set a new Montreat record and reached the NAIA standard last weekend at the VMI Winter Relays, managed to improve on his performance in Johnson City, Tenn. Yelton placed second in the men's heptathlon, totaling 4,440 points. Entering the weekend, Yelton's 4,440-point total was the 11
th-highest mark in the NAIA.
Davis Nicol finished third in the heptathlon with 3,188 points, and
Caleb Wells placed fourth at 2,664 points.
Dustin Blevins was among the Cavaliers who impressed on the weekend, hitting the NAIA 'A' standard for automatic qualification in the triple jump. Blevins reached 14.31m on Saturday, good for third place on the afternoon.
Gregory Curry II joined Blevins in the top 10, finishing eighth with a distance of 13.74m.
In the pole vault at the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational,
Micah Matheson added another top-five finish to his resume. The Germantown, Ohio native cleared 4.30m to place fifth in a talented field.
Montreat registered two other top-10 placements on the weekend, with one coming in the 60m hurdles and the other in the long jump. In the 60m hurdle,
Davian Willis-Howard sprinted to a seventh-place finish at 8.98. Meanwhile,
Jonathan Pehot reached 6.60m in the long jump, the eighth-best performance of all competitors on the day.
