Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga.— The Montreat softball team began its season with a trip to Georgia for a matchup with the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners Friday afternoon. The Mariners captured game one, 5-1, before the second contest was rained out, dropping the Cavaliers to 0-1 on the year.
In the opening competition, CCGA (1-0) started the scoring in the bottom of the second as the Mariners plated a pair of runs; however, the Cavaliers would immediately respond. In the top of the third, two Cavs walks set the stage for the initial run of the season.
Ashley Starnes stepped up and drove in
Jayda Treaster with an RBI single up the middle to get Montreat on the board and cut the team's deficit to one.
Despite the Cavs getting into scoring position over the next couple frames, it was the Mariners who added to their lead. The home team tallied another two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up 5-1 heading into the final inning.
Ultimately, Montreat went down in the seventh in the four-run game, though Starnes went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI and
Katie Johnson notched two hits on three plate appearances.
In game two, CCGA picked up where it left off, scoring two in the first before leading 6-0 through two frames prior to the competition being called in the top of the third inning due to inclement weather.
Softball will be back in action with a doubleheader at South Carolina-Beaufort Saturday afternoon. First pitch of game one is currently set for 2:00 p.m.
