Box Score WALESKA, Ga.— In a road matchup against the No. 24-ranked team in the country Wednesday afternoon, the Montreat women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision after allowing two first-half tallies to the Reinhardt University Eagles. Thanks to the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) result, the Cavaliers now sit at 7-4-3 (7-3-2 AAC) with one game remaining in the regular season.
Reinhardt (12-4, 11-1 AAC) showed its prowess in the early stages of the match, breaking the deadlock on the initial attempt of the contest just 5:45 into the competition to get on the board first.
Though
Hayden Bunn took a Montreat corner kick in the 20
th minute and
Kara Gilsdorf recorded the team's first chance on goal 1:18 later, the Eagles controlled the opening period with possession. Deft passing then contributed to RU's second tally, a score in the 25
th minute that put the hosts up 2-0 heading into the intermission.
At halftime, the Eagles led in shots (9-1), shots on target (4-1) and corners (4-1), while
Logan White collected a save in goal for the Cavaliers.
The Cavs began the second frame with offensive sparks, creating a trio of shots in the opening six minutes of the half; however, each of the tries failed to reach the back of the net via one save and two misses.
The attacks continued to ramp up for both squads as the game opened up in the second half and Montreat settled into the match. White played an integral part in keeping the deficit at two for the Cavaliers, who tallied six second-period shots of their own. The freshman goalie stopped all five of Reinhardt's tries on frame in the latter 45 minutes as she finished with six total saves on the day.
Offensively, Montreat mustered seven total shots toward the RU net, but only put a pair of attempts on frame. The Cavs also earned two corner kicks in the contest. Despite the increased offense late in the matchup, the Cavaliers fell by the 2-0 scoreline as neither team capitalized on chances over the final 45 minutes of action.
Sam Aalbue led the team with three shots, while Gilsdorf and Bunn added the squad's two attempts on goal.
"I'm really proud of how our team executed our tactical strategy and was effective in transition moments," said head coach
Kristin Eggert. "We battled with a program that is top 25 in the nation and kept the second half to a scoreless draw."
