Box Score 2 TOCCOA FALLS, Ga.— The Montreat baseball team started its season with a doubleheader at the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles Friday afternoon, sweeping the home team with 8-0 and 18-3 victories. With the wins, the Cavaliers moved to 2-0 on the year.
In game one,
Daniel Willie cruised on the mound early. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native diced through the Toccoa Falls lineup, registering four strikeouts over the first three innings.
The Cavs got runners in scoring position, but failed to advance them over the initial four frames as the team started 0-for-6 with runners on second or third. Montreat's first hit in those situations came in the top of the fifth after a
Ryan Pereda single and a sacrifice bunt. With the game scoreless,
Rafael Padilla stepped up and crushed a pitch over the wall to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 edge.
Willie, who continued his masterful performance on the day, gave up his first hit in the bottom of the fifth; however, the pitcher immediately picked the baserunner off to end the frame. The right-hander closed out the game with a complete seven-inning effort, surrendering only a single hit and striking out six.
Montreat's offense came alive in the seventh inning as the Cavaliers used six runs to pad their lead. Pereda hit a leadoff home run, while Padilla collected another pair of RBIs with a single to left. A double by
Tarik Latchmansingh and a TFC error both added runs as the Cavs built their advantage to eight. Four Montreat players registered multi-hit competitions, led by Padilla, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
The Cavs picked up in game two where they left off in game one, plating six runs on three hits in the opening frame of the contest. Montreat batted around in the inning to go up big as
Jeff Cardazzone worked his way around the bases before Latchmansingh blasted a two-run shot to put the visitors up 3-0.
Daniel Wetmore and
Luis Ramos each drove in runs before Ramos came around to score on a wild pitch to cap off the inning.
In the second, two Screaming Eagles errors and three Cavalier hits produced another four runs. Following an
OJ Borroto single that scored Latchmansingh, Ramos homered to left field, driving in three more runs to bring the score to 10-0. Montreat expanded its lead to 12 in the third thanks to Latchmansingh's second two-run jack of the game. The Royal Palm Beach, Fla. native concluded game two 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Although the home team scored three runs on the afternoon, Montreat tacked on six runs over the ensuing two innings. In the fifth, the Cavaliers used RBI base knocks by Wetmore and
Michael Bell as well as wild pitches and an error to make the score 16-2. Wetmore concluded game two 3-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs. After the Screaming Eagles tallied their final run in the bottom of the frame, the Cavs finished the scoring with a bases-loaded walk by Bell and a sacrifice fly by
Noah Medina to win by 15.
Eight different Cavs had a hit in the contest and nine scored at least one run in the dominant victory.
Baseball wraps up its three-game set with the Screaming Eagles on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
