WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— The Montreat men's track & field team closed out its season-opening weekend on Sunday at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off in Winston-Salem, N.C. Across 14 events, the Cavaliers notched two school records, a meet record and 10 top-10 finishes.
Freshman
Ethan Stamey, Montreat men's cross country's first NAIA All-American, picked up right where he left off with another strong showing, this time running in the 5,000m. Stamey's performance of 15:13.26 set an indoor school record in the men's 5K, besting the previous mark (15:22.91) by more than nine seconds. Stamey's time also met the NAIA "B" standard for national qualifying.
William Hamilton joined Stamey in competing in the men's 5,000m, placing 10
th with a time of 15:29.79.
Dustin Blevins, an NAIA All-American in both the long jump and triple jump, set a school and meet record in Sunday's long jump. Blevins, who opened the previous Montreat indoor long jump record, easily broke his mark with a jump of 7.47m. That 7.47m effort not only won Blevins the event, but also surpassed the NAIA automatic qualification "A" standard. As of Monday morning, Blevins ranks as the sixth-best performer of all U.S. college track & field athletes in the long jump.
Jonathan Pehot also jumped for Montreat in the long jump, finishing ninth at 6.52m.
Montreat men's track & field earned six other top-10 finishes at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off on Sunday.
Dylan Branch and Christopher Upton were the top two Montreat finishers in both the mile and 3,000m events. Branch finished fourth (4:28.45) in the mile, while Upton crossed the end line just a few places behind Branch in eighth (4:38.17). In the 3,000m, Branch hit the NAIA "B" standard with his 8:44.09 time, good for sixth individually on the day. Upton finished his 3,000m in 10
th with a time of 8:53.26.
Blevins and
Brady Roth also earned top-10 placement in triple jump and weight throw, respectively. Blevins recorded a distance of 13.52m in the triple jump, good for seventh place, while Roth totaled 13.70m in the weight throw, good for 10
th place.

The Montreat men's track & field team will resume its season on Jan. 15 at the Mondo College Invitational in Winston-Salem.
