JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.— The Montreat Cavalier men's golf team officially began its fall season with the East Tennessee Collegiate, which was scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday. Following the initial round of action, the Cavs placed third out of eight schools. Since the second round was canceled due to inclement weather on Tuesday, the Cavaliers officially ended in third position as a team.
After one round of play, the Cavaliers found themselves within striking position, shooting 301 as a squad, just a pair of strokes behind second-place Cumberlands heading into what would have been the final day of competition.
Hayden Zitzewitz (73), Aaron Elmore (74) and Ryan Poblacion (75) all shot in the mid-70s over the initial 18 holes to lead the Cavs. On the par-72 course, Zitzewitz sat tied for fifth, Elmore was knotted in 10th and Poblacion finished tied for 12th after the opening day.
Ben Leonard shot a 79 on Monday, while John Bigelow IV added an 80 to round out the Cavalier lineup. Leonard finished tied for 23rd overall and Bigelow tied for 28th individually.
The final round was canceled due to inclement weather and an unplayable course on Tuesday, so the results from Monday were noted as official.
The men's team will be back on the course for the AAC Fall Preview, which will be played Oct. 12-13. Rounds are set to be completed at Barnsley Gardens Resort in Adairsville, Ga.
