Women’s soccer scores twice in defeat versus No. 20 Life

MARIETTA, Ga.— The No. 20-ranked Life University Running Eagles defeated the Montreat College women's soccer team 4-2 on Saturday at Lupo Family Field in Marietta, Ga. In what was the Cavaliers' first road match of the season, their opposition quickly established a lead with three goals in the first half. The Cavs' efforts included one goal in each period, but they were unable to overcome the home side's early advantage.

Montreat fell to 0-2-0 on the season, marking its second consecutive match against a top-25 foe, while Life improved to 3-0-0 after the victory.

In the first half, the Cavaliers and the Running Eagles engaged in a dynamic exchange of goals. Life took an early lead with a goal in the seventh minute. Montreat responded effectively, leveling the match at 1-1 when Rebeca Cruz Manon scored in the 30th minute. Maddie Ellis picked up an assist on the tally. Despite the Cavs' efforts, the hosts regained the lead with a goal in the 42nd minute. Life extended its edge moments later with another strike just before the half, concluding the frame with a 3-1 advantage. Anna Weissenfluh made several crucial saves to keep Montreat competitive in the frame.

The second period saw a determined effort from the Cavs as Weissenfluh's goalkeeping was highlighted by multiple saves, including an important stop in the 65th minute; however, Life still managed to tack on a fourth goal with extended pressure. Sam Aalbue found the net on a long-range free kick in the 85th minute, narrowing the score to 4-2. Despite several offensive pushes, including a shot by Kaylene Manternach in the 64th minute and another attempt by Aalbue in the 77th minute, the match concluded with the Running Eagles maintaining their lead.

"The second half was completely different. We battled and brought the physicality," said head coach Kristin Eggert. "Pieces are starting to come together, and I am excited with where this team is headed once we bring that level for 90 minutes."

Life closed out the contest with advantages in shots (28-7), shots on goal (12-4) and corner kicks (9-0). Meanwhile, Montreat owned an 8-2 edge in saves.

Weissenfluh made all eight of those saves in goal for the Cavaliers after notching a career-high 11 stops last weekend. Aalbue contributed significantly on offense with one goal from three total shots, two of which were on target. Ellis provided an assist, helping create offensive opportunities. Cruz Manon also found the back of the net, scoring one goal from two shots, with one shot on target.

The next challenge for the Cavs comes on Sept. 6 as they travel to Cleveland, Ga., to face No. 21 Truett McConnell University. The match kicks off at 2 p.m.
