Women’s soccer drops AAC opener at No. 16 TMU

CLEVELAND, Ga.— No. 16-ranked Truett McConnell University secured a 3-1 victory over the Montreat College women's soccer team on Saturday at the TMU Soccer Complex in Cleveland, Ga. With the defeat, the Cavaliers dropped to 0-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action. Meanwhile, the Bears improved to 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play following the victory.

The first half started with a swift attack from Truett McConnell as the hosts scored in the opening minute to seize a quick 1-0 lead. Despite the early setback, Anna Weissenfluh routinely stood firm under pressure, making impressive saves against multiple shots. Offensively, the Cavs sought a breakthrough with a high shot from Natalie Hall in the 42nd minute and a saved attempt by Jocelyn Stanley shortly after; however, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Bears at the end of the frame.

The second period began with Truett McConnell applying pressure right away, ultimately capitalizing with a goal in the 51st minute to double its lead. Weissenfluh added numerous stops in the half to keep the Cavs within striking distance, but despite her efforts, TMU added another tally in the 82nd minute. Montreat responded late in the game when Hall scored her initial goal of the season in the match's final minute. Rozsa Williford notched an assist on Montreat's first goal against the Bears since 2021. In the end, though, the nationally-ranked hosts walked away with a hard-fought 3-1 triumph.

"I am so proud of how this team has leaned into adversity," said head coach Kristin Eggert. "The best is yet to come."

Weissenfluh made a career-high 12 saves during the match. Williford contributed with her first assist of the year, aiding the team's offensive efforts. Hall scored one goal, capitalizing on one of her three total shot attempts.

Overall, TMU registered 13 more shots than their counterpart (22-9), including eight additional tries on target (15-7). Montreat earned two corner kicks compared to the Bears drawing seven.

The next challenge for the Cavaliers takes them to Barbourville, Ky., where they will face Union Commonwealth University on Sept. 10. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
