BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.—The Montreat College women's soccer team fell to the Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies in a 4-0 defeat at Pulliam Stadium on Saturday night. The visitors came into the match ranked No. 22 in the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The match marked the first countable contest for the Cavaliers (0-1-0) since Hurricane Helene shortened the 2024 campaign 11 months ago. Pulliam Stadium received a brand-new turf field and a resurfaced track for the season opener.
In the first half, the Cavs' defense was put to the test early as goalkeeper
Anna Weissenfluh made crucial saves against the Grizzlies' shot attempts. Despite a solid defensive effort, Georgia Gwinnett (1-0-0) broke through with a goal that gave the Grizzlies a 1-0 advantage 28 minutes into the contest. Montreat's
Leigh Harpel took multiple shots in the period, but at the end of the half, the visitors still grasped a 1-0 lead.
Montreat applied early pressure to begin the second period, creating scoring opportunities through a corner kick taken by Harpel and a header by
Madelyn Schultz. Despite Montreat's efforts, the Grizzlies capitalized on their chances, scoring two goals to extend their lead. Weissenfluh kept the Cavs in the match with multiple saves, but the half concluded with GGC adding another goal in the 80
th minute, securing the 4-0 triumph.
Weissenfluh led Montreat with 11 saves, facing 15 shots in the match. Harpel was active offensively, recording four shots with three on target.
Sam Aalbue also contributed with three shots, two of which were on goal.
The Cavaliers were outshot in the contest, 25-8, and were awarded less corner kicks (4-2) than their foe. Montreat and Georgia Gwinnett each committed eight fouls during the competition.
"Having a season cancelled and getting to come back for a new season, a new match, on new turf, it's pretty exciting," said head coach
Kristin Eggert.
In their next two matches, the Cavaliers will battle two additional opponents ranked in the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
"Whenever you have tough competition, your identity gets tested. We want to run into the fire early as we go through the season so we can pull a polished product out," Eggert added.
Looking ahead, the Cavaliers will travel to Marietta, Ga. to face No. 20 Life University on August 30. The match is set for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
