WALESKA, Ga.— For the second consecutive academic year, a Montreat College athletic program was selected as the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Team of Character. According to a release from the league office early Tuesday afternoon, the Montreat women's basketball team was named the 2024-25 award recipient.
The Cavaliers didn't have a home after Hurricane Helene rendered McAlister Gymnasium unusable for more than four months, yet they didn't let that stop them. Despite the lack of somewhere on campus to practice and host games, Montreat made the most of its season.
Sometimes traveling more than an hour each way for practice and home games, the Cavs still managed to grab the No. 5 seed in the AAC Tournament, their best seeding since the 2013-14 season. Overall, Montreat went 17-12 (14-8 AAC) in its first season under head coach
Jamie Moore. The Cavaliers picked up eight AAC Player of the Week nods, four all-conference team selections and a Defensive Player of the Year award during 2024-25.
Off the court, Montreat was also involved in the hurricane recovery efforts and cleanup. Along with several players helping in their own local communities, the squad aided in an event at La Tapa Lounge where they helped pack, unpack and move needed supplies, mattresses, etc. for those impacted in the community and the region.
In the classroom, the Cavs registered six Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors and eight AAC All-Academic Team recognitions.
