GREENSBORO, N.C.— Montreat's women's track & field team split up and traveled to two meets this weekend. One group of athletes went to the Aggie Classic, hosted by North Carolina A&T State University, in Greensboro, N.C. The other group competed at the Hill City Twilight in Lynchburg, Va.
Altogether, eight Cavaliers competed across the weekend. The Cavs came away with three new school records, a trio of national standards and two event wins across the two days.
At the Hill City Twilight, Montreat only ran in two events during the Friday competition. The events were the 4x800m relay and the 5000m. The Cavaliers showed well, though, winning both events and setting two new school records in the process. The winning relay team consisted of
Dylan Garcia,
Macy Parks,
Emily Standifer and
Yessenia Castellanos. The group ran a time of 9:16.11, surpassing the school record and earning an NAIA 'A' standard.
Heather Murphy raced in the 5000m event for Montreat. She finished first among many NCAA Division I athletes with a 16:30.11, beating her own school record by roughly 13 seconds. She had already secured an 'A' standard earlier in the year, but she made sure she didn't lose her pace surpassing the standard again.
At the Aggie Classic, three Cavaliers competed in four events. In the high jump,
Emma Barnes finished fifth with a jump of 1.35m. Barnes had a leap of 4.43m to finish 23
rd in the long jump event. The only race she ran was the 200m where she placed 30
th with a time of 26.26 seconds.
Both
Jessica Gakeri and
Lydia Norman bounded in the long and triple jump events. Gakeri finished fifth in the triple jump after a new school record and 'A' standard leap of 12.16m. Her 5.27m effort in the long jump was good enough for 14
th in the meet. Although Norman did not register a mark in the triple jump, she placed 19
th with a mark of 5.04m in the long jump.
