BREVARD, N.C. — The Montreat College women's track & field team sent athletes to a pair of meets on Thursday and Friday, starting with the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University before closing out the week with the Tornado Classic at Brevard College. Between the two days of competition, the Cavaliers' 19 entries accrued one school record, three wins and six personal bests across eight events.
Overall, the Cavs participated in just the 1500m on Thursday in High Point, N.C.
Macy Parks,
Eliza Nelson and
Naomi Smith completed the race, doing so against a 90-runner field that featured predominantly NCAA athletes. Parks ended as the top NAIA finisher in the event, concluding 15
th with a personal-best time of 4:45.40. Nelson also notched career-best showing, doing so in 5:29.99 to place 74
th. Smith rounded out Montreat's three finishers with a time of 5:58.79, good for 84
th.
The rest of the Cavaliers competed on Friday in Brevard, N.C. In total, Montreat scored 77 points across seven events, good for fourth out of eight scoring programs.
Shelby Brown delivered one of the biggest highlights of the meet, winning the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 40.79m. The Pasadena, Md. native bested the previous distance by 0.77m, and she eclipsed her prior collegiate high by 6.24m.
Isis Rain Giron and
Izzi Ackerman also participated, with the former ending sixth out of 10 thanks to her 37.84m showing, and the latter placing 10
th with a 28.33m performance.
Trinety Dajuste and
Lydia Norman competed in a pair of jumps together, one of which featured a Dajuste title. The freshman beat out her teammate and one other athlete in the high jump by clearing 1.52m. Norman finished third in her outdoor event debut, posting a mark of 1.22m. Meanwhile, Norman placed second out of seven competitors in the long jump, utilizing a distance of 5.34m to achieve a personal best. Dajuste wrapped up the event in fifth with a 4.74m showing.
The Cavs threw their hat in the ring across three additional field events. In the javelin, Giron ended fourth out of eight at 23.41m. Meanwhile, Ackerman topped her personal best by 1.58m with a sixth-place distance of 20.15m. The pair was then joined by Brown in the discus. Giron led the group and finished fifth of 13 behind her toss of 30.47m. Brown (24.13m) and Ackerman (23.59m) placed consecutively in seventh and eighth, respectively. Continuing her busy meet, Giron also concluded fourth in the shot put. The Greensboro, N.C. native finished in the top half of a 12-participant pool with a distance of 9.63m.
Montreat's only track event from the Tornado Classic featured a win and a personal best. Competing in a four-runner 400m field,
Kaylene Manternach dashed her way to a first-place time of 1:01.41. Meanwhile,
Natalia Nieto set a new personal best by roughly a quarter of a second, crossing the finish line in third with a 1:03.22 performance.

The Montreat College women's track & field team continues its split-squad action next Friday and Saturday by sending athletes to the Asheville Bulldog Invite in Asheville, N.C. and the Southside Power & Fitness Invitational in Hickory, N.C.
