ANDERSON, S.C.— The Montreat women's track & field team returned to the state of South Carolina on Friday and Saturday for the Electric City Invitational, a two-day meet hosted by Anderson University. Between Friday and Saturday, the Cavaliers' 23 entries picked up three wins, two school records and two national standards.
Overall, Montreat finished sixth out of 21 scoring teams. The Cavs accumulated 57 points across 11 events.
After her historic 10k performance last week at the Raleigh Relays,
Heather Murphy picked up right where she left off on Friday in the 5000m invite. The Portarlington, Ireland native obliterated the school record in her outdoor 5k debut, shaving 50.35 seconds off the program's previous-best time. Her effort of 16:43.26 beat out 16 other runners while comfortably meeting the NAIA 'A' standard. Murphy's time ranks third in the NAIA this season.
Not to be outdone,
Dylan Garcia also broke a record while achieving a national mark Saturday afternoon. Garcia won the 800m, topping a field of 74 participants with her time of 2:13.17. Also the fourth-quickest time in the NAIA this year, Garcia's performance was 3.50 seconds better than her old school record.
Montreat's other win came in a long-distance event.
