MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat baseball team hosted the Bob Jones University Bruins Tuesday afternoon in the squad's 2025 nonconference finale. Playing a nine-inning affair, the Cavaliers overcame a pair of one-run deficits to seize a 5-4 victory at Newell Field. With the win, Montreat improved to 18-26 on the year.
Justin Austin got the Cavs on the board first after a pair of scoreless frames. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native yanked a single inside the first base line, plating
Daniel Wagner and
Kaden Ethier. As a result, the hosts held a 2-0 lead through three.
Bob Jones (9-23) tried but couldn't muster any offense against
Ashe Ammerlaan. The Bruins notched their first and only hit against the lefty during the top of the fourth. Ammerlaan ultimately tossed four shutout innings, walking three while striking out six in his 10
th start of the campaign.
The visitors put up a fight during the middle innings, briefly capturing a 3-2 lead in the fifth thanks to a three-run blast.
Jaider Morelos knotted the score in the bottom half of the frame, though, serving a single into right center that allowed
Zeb Marquis to dash home.
Once again, BJU claimed a one-run lead, this time via a throwing error in the seventh; however, to the Bruins' dismay, the Cavaliers responded immediately again. Morelos registered another RBI knock, and a misplayed ball in left field pushed home the eventual game-winning run.
Jayden Hughes picked up his first win of the season, surrendering zero hits and an unearned run in the seventh.
Trevor Laughlin and
Hunter Rast each threw a scoreless frame while striking out a pair. The former bridged the gap by pitching the eighth, and Rast recorded his second save this year by pitching the ninth.
As a squad, Montreat outhit its counterpart, 9-3. Morelos, the lone Cav with multiple knocks, delivered three of those hits. Morelos and Austin each accumulated two RBIs, while Marquis scored and walked twice.
"Today was a tough one to swallow, but it was a win," said head coach
Jason Beck. "It was encouraging to see a really good start from Ammerlaan as we enter our final two weeks. The back end of the bullpen did a good job as well. Overall, we still have to make minor improvements, but we got the win, and that's what counts."
Montreat heads to Milligan University on Friday and Saturday for its final road games of the 2025 campaign. Friday's standalone contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m. in Milligan, Tenn.
