MILLIGAN, Tenn.— Montreat's baseball team visited the Milligan University Buffaloes on Friday for the start of an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series at Anglin Field in Milligan, Tenn. The Cavaliers faltered in the nine-inning contest, dropping a 10-1 scoreline.
Montreat (18-27, 9-16 AAC) started the game with a quick run in the top of the first.
Tommy Ramos singled to left field. On the play,
Dawson Bryant scored. Still in the inning, the Cavs had the bases loaded with only one out but couldn't capitalize and were doubled up to end the frame.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Buffaloes (26-19, 15-10 AAC) took the lead with three hits leading to two runs. Milligan continued the strong offense and scored another three runs in the next frame. Both teams were held scoreless for three innings, and then in the sixth, the Buffs scored five runs thanks in large part to a three-run homer. At the end of the nine innings, the Buffaloes triumphed, 10-1.
Merritt Evans got the start and only pitched for one inning. He gave up three hits and two runs. He also struck out a batter without walking one. His record moved to 3-5 in the loss.
Nick Kantzavelos took his spot to start the second frame. Kantzavelos went 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and seven runs. He struck out and walked two Buffaloes.
Logan Strickland pitched the final two outs in the sixth inning. The first pitch he threw was the three-run home run that gave Milligan its nine-run advantage.
Donovan Parker finished the game for Montreat, spending the last two innings on the bump. He walked one batter in his performance.
Individually, Ramos and
Jaider Morelos each had two hits on the day, leading Montreat. Ramos had the only RBI, and Bryant scored the only run. Morelos,
Brett Pitzer and
Justin Austin were the only Cavs to record a walk in the game.
Montreat had nine hits in the loss, and it left seven runners on base. The Cavs went 9-for-31 in their series opener against the Buffaloes. None of the Cavaliers' hits went for extra bases. The Cavs struck out nine times and walked three times in the game.
The Cavs can still win the series on Saturday with two wins. A nine-inning game is scheduled for 12 p.m. with a seven-frame contest to follow.
