ASHEVILLE, N.C.— Montreat College's women's track & field team made the short trip over to Asheville, N.C. to compete in the Asheville Bulldog Invite on Friday and Saturday. Montreat athletes competed in 12 events with 31 entries and one event debut. During the meet, the Cavaliers won an event and achieved an NAIA 'A' standard. They also set three new personal bests.
In the best Cavalier result of the day,
Jessica Gakeri won the triple jump outright with her leap of 12.02m. With the effort, she surpassed the NAIA 'A' standard mark by 0.01m.
Lydia Norman also competed in the event and placed 15
th with a jump of 9.97m.
The next best result came in the 800m race.
Yessenia Castellanos placed seventh with a time of 2:20.41.
Emily Standifer finished in 12
th with an effort of 2:22.26.
Three Montreat athletes placed in the javelin event.
Nevaeh Pereira placed eighth after a hurl of 28.21m.
Isis Rain Giron and
Izzi Ackerman also threw for the Cavaliers. The two finished in that order in 12
th and 23
rd, respectively. Giron threw for 26.92m, and Ackerman's distance was 15.44m.
The long jump saw two Cavaliers finish in the top ten. Gakeri rounded out her performance in Asheville with a ninth-place finish in the event thanks to her mark of 5.28m. Her teammate Norman placed right behind her in 10
th with a 5.23m effort.
Saniya Miller placed 22
nd with a bound of 4.84m.
Most of the events that the Cavs competed in were field events, but the 400m did not disappoint either.
Adrianna Gullette set a new personal record of 1:01.08 in her 12
th-place finish.
Natalia Nieto placed 17
th in her event debut with a time of 1:04.45.
The shot put had four Montreat participants, and three of them placed inside the top 25. Giron placed 18
th with a mark of 9.76m. Behind her, Pereira and Brown finished 23
rd and 24
th with efforts of 8.80m and 8.69m, respectively.
The discus event saw four Cavaliers compete, but only one concluded their day inside the top 25 competitors. Giron finished in 21
st place with a throw of 31.18m. Similarly in the hammer throw, the one Cav inside the top 25 was
Shelby Brown, who set a new personal best with her mark of 34.55m, which was good enough for 23
rd.

Up next, the Montreat squad prepares for the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. The three-day competition starts on April 17 and concludes on April 19.
