Cavs wrap up AAC schedule at home

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Montreat's women's lacrosse team closed its Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season schedule with a matchup against the University of the Cumberlands Patriots. The guests came into the contest ranked fourth in the latest NAIA poll. At the end of 60 minutes of play, the Patriots beat the Cavaliers by a score of 24-2.
 
In the first quarter, the visitors got right to business and scored five goals in the opening five minutes of the competition. Cumberlands (13-3, 4-1 AAC) took 21 shots in the first quarter alone. Goalie Tayah Quinn made five saves in the frame for Montreat. By the end of the period, the Cavs trailed 11-0.
 
The second quarter was very similar to the first. Montreat (0-12, 0-5 AAC) did not attempt a shot in the first half and surrendered another six goals in the period. The Cavs secured four ground balls in the half and won three draw controls. Quinn made another three saves as the Cavaliers were behind the Patriots, 17-0, at halftime.
 
The Montreat offense showed some life in the second half, scoring a goal in each of the remaining quarters. Grace Wiegand netted both goals from free-position attempts for the Cavs. The first came with over a minute remaining in the third quarter. The second occurred in the fourth frame with 17 seconds left. The contest ended 24-2 in favor of the Patriots.
 
Individually for the Cavs, Wiegand had both goals and five of the eight shots. Of Wiegand's five shots, three of them were on target. The only other Cavalier with a shot on goal was Anna White. Adara Vouriotis had the most caused turnovers with two. White had the other defensive stat for Montreat. Breianna Boyd had the most ground balls for the Cavs with two. Behind her, five other Cavaliers secured a stat in the category. Wiegand led Montreat with four draw controls. Marley Smith corralled two and White had one. Quinn totaled 10 saves in the conference battle.
 
In total, Cumberlands had 40 shots and Montreat had eight. The Cavs turned possession over 18 times with the Patriots doing so 10 times. Regarding clears, the visitors went 12-for-13, while Montreat went 5-for-14. The Cavs had more free-position attempts than the Patriots, converting both of their two attempts. The Patriots converted their lone free-position opportunity.
 
The Cavaliers will prepare for the AAC Tournament beginning on Apr 17. Montreat secured the No. 6 seed and will play the third-seeded Georgetown College Tigers in the first round of the postseason event. The University of the Cumberlands will host the event in Williamsburg, Ky.
